Nick shook his head. No. Stupid thoughts like that would ruin their friendship. Not that Epi would want someone broken like him. His head was still a jumbled mess after his relationship with Becky. Nick should be focusing on two things— fixing himself and stopping the Goatman from killing more campers.

Epi returned three minutes later wearing a flannel shirt buttoned to her neck and a pair of black leggings. The hem of her shirt fell to her thighs, so the only cheeks Nick could see now were the bright red ones on her face as she returned to the living room. Her hair looked freshly brushed, and the corner of her mouth held a dab of toothpaste.

“Sorry. I was trying to clean up the glass when you pounded on the door. And I was afraid you would’ve kicked the door in if I took a second to put on clothes.”

“I was about to.”

“You were?”

Nick shrugged. “I probably would’ve busted my foot in the process, but I was afraid the Goatman had hurt you.”

“Wow. You’re a badass.”

It was Nick’s turn to blush. “Not really. Here. Let me help you clean up. Do you have a dustpan?”

“In the pantry.” Epi went to retrieve it along with a broom.

He picked up a few of the bigger shards and followed her into the kitchen to get the garbage can. They returned to the living room and worked as a team to get every last sliver of glass off the floor. Afterward, they looked for something to cover the broken window but came up empty outside of a blanket. It would be the same story at Nick’s cabin. In the morning, they’d have to call park maintenance to board them up until new windows could be ordered.

“So what now?” Epi asked.

Nick fell onto the couch. “I can’t leave you here alone without a window. Not with the Goatman out there.”

“You really saw it?” Epi took the seat next to him.

“Yeah. It was unbelievable. And it was no man in a costume— not unless Hollywood made it for him.” Nick massaged his temples, sinking deeper into the cushion. “If I didn’t know better, I’d think I’d lost my marbles.”

She playfully punched him in the arm. “You lost them a long time ago.”

“Thanks.”

“Sorry. But it’s true.” She ran her fingers through her hair. “You look tired.”

“I feel tired. If you have another blanket, I’ll crash right here.”

Shaking her head, she said, “If the Goatman is really out there, shouldn’t we stay together?”

“I guess.”

“My bed is big enough for two. You know— safety in numbers.”

Nick raised an eyebrow.

“I can sleep under the sheet, and you can lie over it. Or we can sleep head to feet, whatever makes you comfortable. Come on.” She stood up and held out her hand.

He used it to pull himself to standing. “Fine. I’ll sleep on top of the sheet, but I’m told that I snore.”

“Snoring doesn’t bother me.”

“Well, if it does, just tell me, and I’ll move to the couch.”

“Deal.”

Nick peeked through the jagged opening of the window but saw only the dark forest outside.
